After a long hiatus from Elance, a job outsourcing bidding site for freelancers, I decided to give it another try. Since I am a transcriptionist and a writer, I signed up for both categories - $15 for 25 connects or credits to bid. (Most bids will cost you one connect, but some require two).

I typed in the keyword 'transcription' to look for related projects. Most of the people are searching for top notch transcripts, but list pay rates of $10-$15. I found that to be insulting. Keep in mind that this is not everyone; just the ones that I came across. I'm sorry but $10 for one hour of audio is absurd and while some people will accept it, I will not.

I decided to go over to the writing category and see if my luck would be better and I'm happy to say that it was. A buyer accepted my offer and I completed the project one day early. I have to say that I did have to make one set of revisions as the client was looking for a more personal approach, but the end result was 'wow, that's an awesome article,' followed by immediate payment through PayPal. I was also asked if they could offer me other projects in the future - of course, I said yes.

It's nice to see that some people don't mind paying for quality work. I know I could have probably gotten paid 20% more for the project, but a great client and quick payment certainly makes up for it - and it was a fair rate of pay.

I have about 12 more connects for Elance, so we'll see how it goes. Maybe I'll sign up again next month.

If you've read much about medical transcription as a career, you know that choosing the right school is important. There are a lot of opinions out there for which schools are the best, and there are a number of good ones out there. But have you really thought about how much this decision can effect your career?

The main effects are naturally in the early days of your career. If your education isn't good enough, you're going to have a hard time even getting your transcription career started. It's hard to find a job if you can't pass a test showing that you can do the work.

There's more to it than landing that first job, however.

It's also about how much you earn at first. Most at home medical transcriptionist positions pay on production. The better your education prepared you for real work as a transcriptionist, the faster you will transcribe in the early days. The effect this has on your pay can be dramatic.

Oncology

We have a large and still expanding Oncology account. You'll use their software, but type into your own Word program so your Expanders and existing dictionaries will work for you.

You have to have:

- Oncology experience
- XP (No Vista, sorry)
- 9-Pin Serial Pedal or willingness to buy one
- 9-Pin Serial Port or willingness to buy an adapter
- High speed internet access (just to keep you from going crazy)

You will have at least one assigned doctor, plus be a float/fill-in. We have space/need for at least two FT people. Let us know how much work you can do, we'll figure out the rest.

We pay 8cpl after you're off QA (7cpl before) and if you're not off QA within a week, then you shouldn't have applied in the first place. In other words - serious applicants only.

Part of the work is also the equivalent of editing, but easier, and for that we pay 3cpl. Our folks call it "free lines."

MedQuist class-action suit is settled

MedQuist Inc., a Mount Laurel company that supplies medical transcription services, announced this week that a U.S. District Court in New Jersey has approved a settlement in a case involving alleged underpayment of transcriptionists and tossed out the class-action suit.

Under the settlement, MedQuist will pay $1.1 million to the Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity to fund programs that benefit transcriptionists and the transcription industry. And $400,000 more will cover settlement administrative costs and plaintiff's counsel's out-of pocket expenses.

In his opinion, Judge Jerome Simandle said the settlement "represents a fair and innovative approach to the settlement of a weak case." The company maintains "the allegations in the suit were completely meritless," Mark Sullivan, MedQuist's general counsel, said. MedQuist said it settled to avoid "additional expense and continuing distraction." - Stacey Burling
